CO lawmaker tried to pick up kids but arrested on DUI: cops

Colorado Rep. Matt Gray was arrested on suspicion of a DUI after trying to pick up his kids from school on April 21, 2022, in Broomfield, media outlets report.

A Colorado lawmaker was arrested and accused of DUI after he tried to pick up his two children from school, multiple news outlets reported.

Democratic State Rep. Matt Gray was arrested on April 21 at his children’s elementary school in Broomfield, KMGH-TV reported.

School employees told police that Gray stumbled in the hallway, slurred his words and smelled of alcohol, and they wouldn’t let him leave with his kids, the news outlet reported.

The police were called and Gray refused to take a field sobriety test or take a breath test, KUSA reported.

Police said his eyes were bloodshot, and he looked unsteady and smelled of alcohol, KCFR-FM reported.

McClatchy News reached out to Gray for a comment but did not immediately hear back.

Gray said he wasn’t under the influence of alcohol but was instead having a panic attack, KUSA reported. He also pointed out his “excellent parking job” to officers.

The children ages 6 and 8 were told by school staff to stay in the building and their mother was called, KCFR-FM reported.

Gray tweeted and then deleted a statement regarding his DUI charge on April 22, The Colorado Sun reported.

“As many of you know, yesterday I was arrested on suspicion of DUI,” Gray said, according to the Sun. “I was not intoxicated, but my symptoms of anxiety and depression are such that too many people are worried when they’re around me. I’m going to increase my level of therapy and appreciate all the support.”
